Periodontology is the area of dentistry dedicated to the study, diagnosis and treatment of pathologies that affect the supporting tissues of the teeth, that is, tooth supporting bone and gums.
Periodontal disease, which affects around 65% of adult patients, is, even today, often diagnosed late due to the absence of initial symptoms. Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection that evolves chronically and can lead to loss of tooth-supporting bone, tooth mobility, movement and the appearance of spaces between teeth, periodontal abscesses, periodontal pockets and gingival recessions.
There are genetic risk factors, uncontrolled diabetes, smoking that may be associated with its severity and rate of progression.
